There are some things about getting married that a lot of people never really think about. For one thing, a pair of spouses can have two separate credit scores, do everything together, and still have a significant discrepancy between them. For another, some people forget to update their will when they tie the knot. This is a step on equal footing with remembering to say “I do,” because it can have serious repercussions down the line if you happen to forget. It can impact how much of your estate your spouse gets, and can even deny them easy access to it.
First off, you need to keep your will somewhere your spouse can find and actually access it. Having it in a safe deposit box that they can’t get to will help no one, as it will take a court order to open it up. Do you want your spouse to have to go through all of that after you die? Hopefully you want no such thing for them.
For another thing, you need to understand that sometimes a will is extremely necessary. Did you know that in some states, your siblings are entitled to your estate before your spouse is? While every state has its own set of laws, tidbits of that nature could completely disinherit your spouse if you died without keeping your will up to date and with their needs in mind. Just as you help them while you’re here, you need to think about what will happen to them if you go first. Even if they make just as much money as you do, losing you is going to be expensive.
